WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE
The Pirates drafted Irvine as a junior from Iowa.  He was a reliever his first two years and mostly a starter in 2021.  He didn’t put up good numbers in college, with a 6.33 career ERA.  As a junior, he had a 6.43 ERA and 1.76 WHIP, with 31 walks and 49 strikeouts in 49 innings.  He also threw six wild pitches and hit four batters, so control seems to be an issue.  He’s done better in summer ball, including a 1.96 ERA in the Northwoods League in 2020, with 38 strikeouts in 23 innings.  Irvine throws the standard four pitches.  Baseball America didn’t rank him among its top 500 draft prospects, but ranked him eighth in Iowa in a weak year for the state.

DNP

Irvine was one of the Pirates’ pitching draftees who did not get into a game before the season ended.

2022
R:  2-1-1, 1.46 ERA, 0.81 WHIP, 12.1 IP, 1.5 BB/9, 7.3 K/9
A:  0-0-0, 3.18 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 11.1 IP, 5.6 BB/9, 8.7 K/9

Irvine was on the 60-day injured list when the 2022 season started.  The Pirates activated him in the FCL at the beginning of July and moved him up to Bradenton at the beginning of August.  Pitching in relief, he was effective in rookie ball but had trouble throwing strikes at the higher level.  He didn’t miss a lot of bats at either level.

The Pirates need some of their lower level pitchers to start stepping forward, which probably explains them loading up on college pitchers in the 2022 draft.  Irvine is one who should get a chance to do so.
