WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE |
The Pirates drafted Lomeli as a college senior. He was mostly a starter for four years at St. Mary’s. His best year was his sophomore year, when he had a 3.05 ERA and 1.06 WHIP. In his senior year, the numbers were 4.21 and 1.31. He did increase his K rate, from 5.9 per nine innings as a sophomore to 8.2 as a senior. Lomeli appears to throw in the upper-80s. Baseball America did not rank him its top 500 draft prospects, nor among the top 100 in California.
2021 Like a number of the Pirates’ 2021 pitching draftees, Lomeli didn’t get into any games before the end of the season. 2022 Lomeli spent the season with Bradenton, pitching much of the time in late-inning relief. For the most part he wasn’t effective, with opponents posting an OPS of .785 against him. He did pitch very well in August and September, allowing just one earned run in 13 innings. He had trouble with left-handed hitters, allowing them a 348/400/478 line. In his debut, Lomeli was a college pitcher at the lowest, full-season level, so the results weren’t good. Without significant improvement, Greensboro could be a tough test. |
